Inside my Exploring Meditation course we travel through a few different meditation ‘terrains’ .. mostly across the worlds of Mantra and Meditation. My own meditation journey has given me teachers and opportunities from both meditation traditions, coupled with my own passionate and natural interest.
So, many do ask, what is the difference between mantra and mindfulness?
and, I am happy to share some of my thoughts, as a contemporary-leaning-meditation teacher, with a keen interest in the ‘art and science’ of meditation, but certainly not a lineage holder in either tradition.
Understanding Mantra Meditation
Mantra meditation is an ancient practice involving the repetition of a sacred word or phrase, known as a ‘mantra.’ Originating in ancient Hindu traditions, mantra meditation aims to still the mind and focus thoughts by immersing practitioners in the soothing rhythm of their chosen mantra. Whether chanted out loud or silently, this repetition helps drown out distractions and cultivate inner peace. Mantra meditation is beneficial for reducing stress, improving focus and concentration, and research has shown, promoting cardiovascular health by lowering blood pressure. For beginners, its structured nature of a mantra can make it easier to maintain focus compared to other techniques.
Understanding Mindfulness
Mindfulness meditation, rooted in Buddhist teachings, is more like an open canvas, inviting practitioners to pay attention to the vivid detail of their present moment, without judgment. Practitioners observe their thoughts, feelings, and sensations with curiosity and kindness, often using the breath as an anchor. This type of meditation helps increase self-awareness and emotional regulation, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve overall well-being. Mindfulness can be practised anywhere and doesn’t require special equipment, making it a versatile approach to achieving mental clarity and reducing stress.
Find the Practice that Resonates with YOU!
Both mantra and mindfulness meditations aim to reduce stress and enhance well-being, but differ in their approaches, and their ‘flavour‘.
Mantra meditation is a form of focused attention meditation – focusing on repeating a specific word or phrase that with practice creates a structured, rhythmic focus, that can quickly lead to deeper meditative states. Mindfulness meditation is a form of open-monitoring meditation which involves observing the present moment, and each moment, without judgment, and develops a broader awareness of one’s own experiences.
There is, of course, no one-size-fits-all meditation technique, but having the opportunity to explore both of these very traditional forms of meditation can help you discover what resonates best with YOU!
As the old saying goes, ‘all roads lead up the mountain’ .. but, when you find a path that engages your curiosity, holds your interest, and offers a sense of peace and insight – that is probably the BEST PATH for you.
