Frankincense and myrrh are among the most widely used of all essential oils .. revered for their powerfully uplifting and clarifying effects on body and mind.

At this time of year, with the festive season on our doorstep, frankincense and myrrh take on another dimension ..  almost the scent of the season, honored in the Christian tradition for their appearance in the New Testament of the Bible as gifts brought by the Wise Men, or Magi, to Bethlehem.

Romantic & mysterious .. an exotic blend of cinnamon & clove spice with a gentle sweet citrus and musk finish

Frankincense and myrrh candle

Ever wondered why a certain scent almost immediately sends you back to a past adventure, boyfriend or memory?

When we smell, the scent goes straight to our hypothalamus, a small section of our brain responsible for regulating dozens of bodily functions including temperature, thirst, hunger, blood-sugar levels, growth, sleeping and waking, and emotions such as anger and happiness.

When we smell, subtle messages are almost immediately sent to the brain’s brain .. and from there to the whole body. Scents also target the emotional processor of the brain (the hippocampus) which is responsible for memory .. hence the transportation to a past life.

Research done at Johns Hopkins University with the essential oil frankincense found that burning this ancient oil activated channels in the brain that alleviated anxiety and depression. The compound was found to significantly affect areas in the brain known to be involved in emotions, as well as in nerve circuits that are affected by anxiety and depression. The study gives some explanation to the millennia-old spiritual practices of using incense and essential oils .. that burning incense really does make you feel warm and ‘in the zone’.

FRANKINCENSE

Aromatic Affect on the Mind: uplifting and centering it has a sweet, balsamic and warm aroma with incense-like overtones.
Spiritual significance: Sacred Frankincense Essential Oil has been used for thousands of years to awaken spiritual awareness and connect with spirit, said to help us release parts of our ego which hold us back from connecting with our soul, as well as feelings of unworthiness.

MYRRH

Aromatic effect on the mind: in ancient times Myrrh was valued at its weight in gold, for its powerful cleansing properties, especially for the mouth and throat. It offers a warm and woody aroma and is an uplifting scent.
Spiritual significance: Myrrh is held to be a highly spiritual oil, an ingredient of Ketoret the consecrated incense described in the Hebrew Bible, and an ingredient used in the holy anointing oil.  The oil has been used in religious ceremonies and rituals for thousands of years; releasing fears, difficulties or painful experiences and supporting our quest to be more accepting, trusting and non-judgmental.
